Character's Type: Spiritually-aware human
Weapon: She does not have spiritual powers as of yet. However, she'll come to realise that she has the ability to heat and manipulate particles to become tiny pins that do not extinguish unless placed against the water. Maki's power can be controlled as long as she wears the charm bracelet that her mother gave her, which is all the time anyway.

1988, October 6th. That day marked a sort of beginning for the young Horikita Chika, as she gave birth to a child who had Shinigami genes within her blood. Chika was a beautiful lady, with which her beauty were passed down to Horikita Maki. On the other hand, Reo was a dashing and charming Shinigami. Reo had only been able to be with Maki for two months after her birth, before he soon disappeared - never to be able to see his baby girl anymore. Because of that, Maki never had a father. Her mother was a loving one, however, so she had never complained about the lack of a father, although her classmates have often teased her about it.

Growing up, she had always been able to interact with spiritual beings, most of which were always surprised to be spoken to. As a toddler, most had assumed that she was only having imaginary friends. She was able to touch them and talk to them, and so she could only naturally assume that they were human. However, as she entered junior high, she was soon bullied for what she could see, and others couldn't. Chika had explained to her daughter that most people cannot see spirits, and that she was an exception. Although she knew the facts, Maki had never seemed to understand completely. In fact, when it comes to anything spiritual, she's quite clueless. Only when she entered senior high did things die down, due to her lack of public interaction with spirits and souls alike.

During her senior high years, Maki had always pushed herself hard to achieve high goals. Never extraordinary smart, it had always been her hard work that puts her high in the academic ranks. There is, though, one thing that she is extremely talented that. That is her art. Often staying behind afterschool to sketch (being her favourite type of art) in the art studios, Maki had long since mastered most of the styles of art. Being in the art club, even her senpais admitted that she had talent - a fact that she would usually humbly deny.

Maki was 17 for a month in university, where she begun to study art again. Now 19, one would often see her with a sketchbook hugged to her chest. Over the years, she had earned herself awards after awards - the most recent one was a gold medal for an art competition. In her university, Maki had been recognised to be the best artist, already beginning to develop her own style through her studies. While her classmates would be studying techniques, she would be spending time on her own, in another studio, sketching. Having awards gained her time with her sketchbook and herself, but it also isolated her. That is one of the big reasons why she had little friends that are in the same classes as her.

Quiet and often alone, Maki has always given off the impression of being a shy girl. Though true, she has never found it hard to talk to people. Her only problem is the inability to think of what to talk about, often leading conversations into silence. Friends of hers would often tease her for being mute all the time, however, she has never seen to be a weak person. While it's fact that she doesn't often stand up for herself, it has been recognised that her silence represents her patience, and not her weakness. Still, though, people of arrogance mock her, albeit not getting a reaction of any sort from her.

It had always been said that the reason why she doesn't speak much is because of how she finds it hard to express her feelings through her words. Instead, her lack of words are painted out onto canvas after canvas. Where someone might want to apologise through simple words, she'd draw an apology and sent it - or even just give it to the person directly. Old-fashioned, but hey, it's her.

When it comes to the things that are inhumane, Maki is quite naive. She has never received direct education about the Soul Society and the things that surround it, nor had she ever learned about why Hollows attack human beings - all she knows is that she's able to talk to things that other people can't even see, and that was just stating the obvious. Either way, the lack of her Shinigami father meant that she's oblivious to the basic knowledge that a girl with Shinigami blood within herself should know. Although she had learned to keep her secret of being able to see spiritual beings to herself, she'd always make the mistake of telling her best friend of the moment about it, thinking that they'd understand. Maki simply doesn't get why people are scared of things like that, but if she was a normal girl, she'd probably be scared, too.

Always being silent had its pluses. Instead of being at the centre of attention - something that she very much dislikes - Maki would be the one listening and basically getting the scoop on everything. Of course, her lips are sealed up tightly, but that's not the point. The point is that she's pretty knowledgeable about friendships and lack thereof. She's observant and is often the first to see a change of mood in the atmosphere, and she's also perceptive, easily able to see different types of emotions on a person's face, even when they're often stony. Being that way meant that she's usually the 'go to' girl, even though she only listens and give sympathetic hugs when needed. But that's also what people need the most.

I'll keep this short. Maki is open to basically anything - friendships, enemies, lovers, etc. She's quiet, but she has more than once been told to be observant and perceptive. Being with her would lead to a lot of comfortable silences, but that's not always the case, ne?

In terms of the spiritual world, she's pretty naive about it. So she'd probably be like a little kid sister when it comes to that.
